You Say IT Best When You Say Nothing At All

Aug 25, 2021

This song was immortalized by Ronan Keating in one of my favorite movies "Notting Hill" with Hugh Grant, another one of my favorites, and Julia Roberts. And for some reason today it has been playing over and over in my mind. When that happens, I have learned to listen.

"The smile on your face lets me know that you need me. There's a truth in your eyes saying you'll never leave me. The touch of your hand says you'll catch me if ever I fall. You say it best when you say nothing at all."

As I'm reading these words and singing the song in my head, what strikes me the most is the truth. In recent years, the world around us has become so loud that we have forgotten how to see, listen, but also hear and feel. We have forgotten that sometimes silence can be louder than any words spoken, that gestures have meanings and love and compassion for fellow humans can make things infinitely better.

This past week reminded me of that. The heartbreak happening a continent away does not need any words, just our prayers and deeds. The photos of despair and hopelessness speak loudly enough about what is happening. There are times when I question the state of humanity, but then I see a photo of a soldier holding a child in his hands and a tear escapes, flutter of hope shines through. Time and time again, I am reminded that even in our darkest hours there is always hope, as long as we believe in something bigger than ourselves. And I have to be honest, I believe. I believe in Grace.
