It Takes Courage

Updated: Sep 4, 2021

It is so much easier to swim with the current, go with the flow and not tip the boat, but is that the right way to truly live your life.

As Mark Twain said “With courage you will dare to take risks, have the strength to be compassionate, and the wisdom to be humble. Courage is the foundation of integrity”.

We live in the world of conformity, world where individualism is no longer celebrated and where if you don’t go with the crowd means you will get canceled and censored. As a physician, I find it very hard to accept the Cancel culture of the science and where before you would be applauded at trying new approaches to treatments, we are now ridiculed and made to feel ashamed.

To me the most sacred part of medicine is the Oath I took to protect my patients and do my best to be a humble servant and healer. In the world where courage to go against the crowd is ridiculed despite many success stories and where the new age science rules, at times it is hard to comprehend my new role. But I find hope in many of my colleagues who are also courageous and forging against the current, I find faith in my renewed relationship with my patients and their incredible friendship and I find truth in the belief that the spirit of humanity will always live on in the stories we leave behind.

So as Bethany Hamilton once said “Courage doesn’t mean you don’t get afraid. Courage means you don’t let fear stop you” and as Audre Lorde reminds us above “It is better to speak” because the truth is on our side.
